Finland

The start and the end of my first European adventure was Finland.

I left Sydney, Australia around 3pm on the 1st June and after roughly 23 hours in transit made it to Helsinki, Finland very early in the morning (hello, 6am in a foreign land- please get me to my hotel ASAP). After a slight wrong turn, lugging a very heavy suitcase over cobbled stones we made it to the hotel and it was time to explore.

We strolled through the town basking in the beautiful morning sunlight waiting for the ferry boat to Suomenlinna. Soumelinnia or Sveaborg is an inhabited sea fortress built on six islands, which now form part of the city of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. We were so lucky with the weather, as an hour after we arrived back to mainland Helsinki it began to rain. Luckily, we were so jetlagged we were happy to find an excuse to head in early for some pasta and much needed rest.

On the way back we stopped in Finland again for another day and a half before getting our plane home. This time we shopped for the half day (in my defence, it was raining and so what else was I meant to do, really?) and visited a beautiful, quaint town called Porvoo about an hour and a half out of Helsinki on the last day. The drive there was lush and green, and the sun was shining beautifully for our last day in Europe! I definitely recommend visiting this little town if you have a spare day in your trip and you're travelling in/through Finland.
